Plexiglass (acrylic) industrial history

- 1931

Mr. Crawford, a chemist at ICI, invented an economical method of making acrylic monomers in his laboratory.

- 1936

British ICI began to manufacture acrylic plates with methyl methacrylate casting polymerization method and applied in fighter cockpit covers.

- 1937

The British ICI synthesizes and mass-produces methyl methacrylate, which makes the acrylic resin manufacturing industry advance by leaps and leaps. This method uses concentrated sulfuric acid to make propanol cyanide (ACH) into an intermediate product, amyl methacrylate sulfate, and then acts with methanol and water to form methyl methacrylate (MMA).

- 1957

Taiwan Chi Mei company tried to manufacture acrylic board and carry it forward, driving Taiwan's acrylic industry. In 1989, the production line was expanded to produce acrylic pellets.

- 1976

Kaohsiung Plastics Esters was established as the first chemical company in Taiwan to produce MMA, providing a stable supply of raw materials for the acrylic industry in Taiwan and the Asia Pacific region.

- 2010.

Dongguan Dimai Lens Products Co., Ltd. began to produce mirror effect acrylic sheets on transparent acrylic sheets by vacuum plating.
